In the first 5 months of 2023, the industrial production index of the whole industry decreased by 2% compared to the same period last year.

Of which, the processing and manufacturing industry decreased by 2.5% (in the same period in 2022, it increased by 8.9%), reducing 1.7 percentage points to the overall growth rate; the electricity production and distribution industry increased by 0.8%, contributing 0.1 percentage points; the mining industry decreased by 3.5%, decreasing 0.5 percentage points; the water supply, waste and wastewater management and treatment industry increased by 6.4%, contributing 0.1 percentage points to the overall growth rate.

By locality, the report said that the industrial production index in the first 5 months of 2023 increased compared to the same period last year in 49 localities; in which, with the IIP increase in the first 5 months of 2023 reaching 15.4% compared to the same period last year, Bac Giang has risen to lead the country in terms of industrial production growth rate. Previously, Bac Giang's industrial production index in the first 4 months of the year increased by only 13.3% over the same period, ranking behind Hai Phong.

Also in the first 5 months of 2023, the locality with the second highest increase in industrial production index in the country was Phu Tho, with the IIP index in the first 5 months of 2023 increasing by 15.2% over the same period. The General Statistics Office explained that some localities had a fairly high IIP growth rate due to the high growth in the processing and manufacturing industry; the electricity production and distribution industry. For the electricity production and distribution industry, localities with high production index growth in this field include: Hau Giang increased by 270.9%; Thai Binh increased by 63.3%; Nam Dinh increased by 12%.

On the contrary, the industrial production index in the first 5 months of 2023 compared to the same period last year decreased in 14 provinces and cities. Specifically, Quang Nam recorded the largest IIP decrease in the first 5 months of the year, down about 33.2% compared to the same period in 2022. Followed by Lai Chau with a decrease of 26.5% compared to the same period last year.
