At least 16 people were killed and 14 injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a passenger bus on a highway in the Bolivian Andes region, Bolivian police said on July 20.
The accident happened on the road connecting the Bolivian town of Patacamaya and the northern Chilean town of Tambo Quemado. The bus was heading towards Chile on a busy commercial and tourist route linking the two South American countries.
Initial investigation shows that the truck crossed into the oncoming lane while trying to overtake another vehicle, leading to this unfortunate accident.
Images of the accident show the front of the bus and the truck were both mangled. Several people died at the scene. People at the scene tried to pull the trapped bodies out. The drivers of both vehicles were killed.
According to statistics, Bolivia has about 1,400 traffic accident deaths each year, mainly due to reckless driving and poor vehicle condition.
On April 4, a traffic collision in southwestern Bolivia left 14 people dead and two injured.
