February 21, 2024 21:17

On February 21, Côte d'Ivoire police announced that at least nine people were killed and 80 others were injured in a collision between a truck and a bus.

According to the Yamoussoukro fire department, the accident occurred on February 20 when a bus from Gabiadji (in the southwest) to Burkina Faso collided head-on with a cargo truck while passing through the town of Yamoussoukro. After the collision of unknown cause, the bus partially collapsed and caught fire.

Firefighters were on scene to rescue the victims and evacuate the injured to medical facilities. Among the dead were two bus passengers who were trapped in the rubble and burned to the ground.

This is one of the most serious traffic accidents in Côte d'Ivoire. Earlier in January 2023, a similar collision between two public transport buses at the entrance to the city of Abidjan also left 14 people dead and 70 others injured.

According to figures provided by the Côte d'Ivoire National Road Safety Office (OSER), each year, there are about 6,000 traffic accidents in the country, killing hundreds of people and injuring over 13,000.
