More than 1.4 million Vietnamese people have taken courses on Coursera, one of the world's largest online learning platforms, four times more than before Covid-19.
Information provided by Coursera on June 15. The average age of learners in Vietnam is 29.
The five courses that Vietnamese people chose the most in the first quarter were: Data, Project Management, Information and Digital, Problem Solving Skills, Digital Marketing and E-Commerce. Of these, 3/5 courses are provided for free by Google, the remaining two courses are from the University of Sydney, Australia.
For college students and faculty, the topic of interest is generative artificial intelligence, said Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO of Coursea.
“Schools see the potential in equipping students with AI knowledge to get good jobs. The number of Vietnamese enrolling in courses in this field is on the rise,” he said. “A Coursera survey last year showed that employers in Asia-Pacific are willing to pay 54% more for employees with AI knowledge.”
Mr. Maggioncalda assessed that Vietnamese students have an advantage when studying online because they are used to it during the Covid-19 period.
In addition, according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, universities are allowed to teach online up to 30% of the total program. After the pandemic, many schools maintained online teaching with about 1-25% of the content, or combined online and in-person learning in some subjects.
Currently, some Coursera courses can be converted into university credits in Vietnam. For example, FPT University integrates more than 80 courses into its bachelor's program in information technology and business, with the number of credits that can be converted accounting for about 20%.
Coursera was founded in 2012 and partners with more than 300 major universities and companies around the world to offer online courses. As of March, the platform had more than 148 million students.
