Forty-seven people have died, while more than 100 others are still being treated, in a case involving more than 150 people being hospitalised after drinking alcohol containing methanol in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
According to Indian officials, since June 19, more than 150 people with symptoms of vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea have been hospitalized after drinking alcohol containing methanol in Kallakurichi district, 250km from the state capital Chennai.
As of the morning of June 21, 118 people were still being treated at the district hospital and nearby areas.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the government has taken action against officials who were negligent and failed to prevent the incident early.
Specifically, at least 10 officials were disciplined, including the district chief and the regional police chief. In addition, the police also arrested four people involved in illegal alcohol sales and seized 200 liters of alcoholic beverages mixed with methanol.
The Tamil Nadu state government is also identifying those involved in the production of methanol - a toxic chemical commonly used in industry.
Fatal poisoning from homemade alcohol, locally known as "hooch" or "country liquor," is common in India because people often cannot afford branded alcohol.
In 2023, also in Tamil Nadu state, there was an alcohol poisoning incident that killed more than 10 people.
