Lamine Yamal's long-range strike against France helped him become the youngest player to score in a EURO or World Cup semi-final.

In the 21st minute of the match at Munich Stadium on the evening of July 9, Yamal curled the ball with his left foot from 25 meters away, stuck it into the top corner and hit the inside edge of the post into the net, equalizing 1-1 for Spain against France.

The goal, at the age of 16 years and 362 days, made him the youngest player to score at the EURO, breaking the 20-year-old record held by striker Johan Vonlanthen, who scored for Switzerland against France at the age of 18 years and 141 days.

Yamal also broke two Pele records that had stood for 68 years at a major tournament. He was the youngest player to play and score in a semi-final of a European Championship or World Cup. The Brazilian legend achieved this feat at the 1958 World Cup, also against France, at the age of 17 years and 244 days. Brazil won the World Cup at that time and Yamal was aiming for the same feat with Spain.

"I'm happy to be celebrating my birthday in Germany," said Yamal, three days before he turns 17. "The only thing I'm thinking about right now is winning with Spain, and I'll do my best to help the team achieve its goal. I just want to win, win, win."

If Spain had lost to France, they would have returned home early, and Yamal would not have been able to celebrate his birthday in Germany. After the Barca striker's masterpiece, Dani Olmo scored the decisive goal for Luis de la Fuente's team, securing a 2-1 victory. This victory puts Spain in the final against England or the Netherlands on the evening of July 14, the day after Yamal's birthday.

Yamal has played in all six games at EURO 2024, scoring once and assisting three. He is the teenager with the most goal involvements in the tournament's history, surpassing and equalling Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 20 years ago, when the Portuguese forward scored two and assisted two.

Yamal was also named man of the match, and is the youngest player to ever do so at a EURO. If he can maintain this form in the final in Berlin, he will continue to break many other records.
