Lucas Paqueta faces early retirement due to match-fixing allegations

On May 24, the FA announced that Lucas Paqueta had shown signs of match-fixing in four Premier League matches from 2022 to 2023. In these matches, the Brazilian midfielder was said to have intentionally received a yellow card "for the wrong purpose of influencing the betting market".

The matches in which Lucas Paqueta was accused were in the confrontations between West Ham and Leicester City (November 2022), Aston Villa (March 2023), Leeds (May 2023), Bournemouth (August 2023).

In response to the FA's accusations, the midfielder spoke out on social media. He said: "I am extremely surprised and disappointed that the FA has made this accusation. During the 9-month investigation, I have cooperated fully with them and provided all the information I have. I deny all these accusations and will fight to the end to prove my innocence. I will not provide any further information to everyone at this time."

The FA and Lucas Paqueta will soon be in a legal battle. If found guilty, the Brazilian star could face a very heavy ban.

According to the newspaperDaily MailThree years ago, Reading defender Kynan Isaac was alsocharged with deliberately receiving a yellow card in an FA Cup match. He was subsequently banned from playing for up to 10 years.

So Lucas Paqueta could face a similar punishment. That could end his career early.

Lucas Paqueta joined West Ham in 2022 and has made 84 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists. He also helped West Ham win the Conference League in 2023.
