Before the Lunar New Year, information appeared on social media about a suspected "blacklist" of volleyball players involved in corruption in the quarter-finals of the 2023 National Volleyball Championship. A coach even claimed that he had been betrayed by his students.

More than a month after information emerged that many Vietnamese volleyball players were involved in match-fixing, the leadership of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation gave an official statement on the morning of February 23.

"Information about suspected match-fixing at the 2023 National Volleyball Championship is only available on social media and nothing is official yet. However, the Federation has had some discussions with relevant units and clubs... The investigation is the job of security agencies, not the Federation. After we have a conclusion, we will have an official announcement.

Regardless, this news is very sad. In 2023, Vietnamese volleyball competed very successfully, but the incident made fans think badly," said Mr. Le Tri Truong - General Secretary of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation.

According to Mr. Truong, although the incident is only at the suspicion level, this is also a warning to clubs, managers, coaches... All must always improve management and educate athletes to avoid falling.

On the morning of February 23, the draw ceremony for the National Volleyball Championship - Duc Giang Chemical Cup 2024 took place. This year's tournament continues with phase 1 (March 16-23, women's group) in Binh Phuoc, from March 30-April 6 in Ha Tinh (men's group).

Phase 2 and the Final Round take place from November 9 to November 17 in Lao Cai (women's group), from November 23 to December 1 in Ba Ria Vung Tau (men's group).

This year's tournament has 9 men's teams and 9 women's teams participating, with a total prize value of more than 2 billion VND (the winning team receives 500 million VND).

What will be the punishment for athletes who refuse to join the national team?

The Vietnam Volleyball Federation has changed its regulations, with a strict stance on cases of refusing to be called up to the national team. Accordingly, if an athlete is called up to the national team or the national youth team but does not comply with the call-up orders of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation and the Department of Sports and Physical Training; or if a club does not allow the athlete to train with the national team for any reason (except in cases of force majeure and with the consent of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation), the Federation will consider not allowing the athlete or club to compete in official rounds and tournaments of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation.
