Chicken is one of the animals that has been closely associated with the lives of Vietnamese people for many generations. Since ancient times, our ancestors have raised and preserved many rare and unique chicken breeds across the country and they still exist today.
To introduce biodiversity and contribute to the promotion of the conservation of the breeds of some purebred Vietnamese chickens to serve the development of regional economies, the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Vietnam Post Corporation issued a postage stamp set "Native Vietnamese Chickens" consisting of 4 designs introducing the following species: Multi-toed Chicken, Dong Tao Chicken, H'Mong Chicken and Lac Thuy Chicken. The stamp set is designed in a graphic style showing the characteristics of each type of chicken associated with their living environment.
Multi-toed chicken:This is a purebred (native) chicken breed, rare and long-standing, closely associated with the livelihood and culture of ethnic minorities in Phu Tho province (Northern Vietnam). In addition to its economic and cultural value, the multi-toed chicken is also a valuable genetic resource, of great significance for biodiversity, genetic diversity, and livestock development. The legs are mainly yellow, some are leaden (black). The special feature of this breed of chicken is that its legs have many toes, usually from 6 to 8 toes, a few have 5 or 9 toes. The toes appear right from when the chicks are hatched and last throughout their lives. According to local people, the more toes a chicken has, the more valuable it is and the higher its commercial value. The 9-toed chicken is very rare and is considered a treasure.
Dong Tao Chicken:Also known as Dong Cao chicken, is a rare and endemic chicken breed of Vietnam. This is a traditional chicken breed of the people of Dong Tao commune, Khoai Chau district, Hung Yen province. People used to use it for worship, festivals or to present to the King. Dong Tao chicken is on the list of rare poultry breeds of Vietnam whose genetic resources are currently being preserved. The characteristics of this breed of chicken are its ugly legs, big and rough legs. When fully grown, the male chicken can weigh over 4.5 kg and the female chicken over 3.5 kg.
Hmong Chicken:H'Mong chicken, also known as Mong chicken, Black Mong chicken or Cat chicken or Black bone chicken, is a rare, purebred (native) chicken breed of Vietnam, originating in the northern mountainous region, raised extensively by the H'Mong people. H'Mong chicken is characterized by black meat, black bones, low fat content, firm meat and is the most delicious of all chicken breeds in Vietnam today. In addition to using it as food, the H'Mong people also cook it to improve their health. Currently, commercial H'Mong chicken is considered a specialty dish.
Lac Thuy Chicken:This is a purebred (native) chicken breed of Vietnam, considered a rare and endemic chicken breed originating from Lac Thuy district, Hoa Binh province and has been raised for a long time, and is a species whose gene source is being preserved. After discovering that this is a rare chicken breed, scientists from the Vietnam Institute of Animal Husbandry decided to name this chicken breed after the place name Lac Thuy.
