Preliminary vote count results in North Carolina and Georgia

Battleground states are states with large numbers of electoral votes and no party candidate has a clear advantage in the elections.

This year, the vote count in seven battleground states, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, will decide whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris will win.

Preliminary vote counts show that Ms. Harris is gaining ground in North Carolina, while Mr. Trump is leading in Georgia.

Each candidate has a number of battleground states that are considered “must-win” on their journey to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. Pennsylvania and Georgia are two of the most important “must-win” states, with 19 and 16 electoral votes, respectively.

These are also two places where candidates have spent a lot of time, energy and money campaigning during the election period. Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris have spent nearly $86 million on advertising in Pennsylvania since July 22.

In Georgia, Mr. Trump spent $25.4 million, while Ms. Harris spent $17.5 million, according to the advertising tracking firm AdImpact.

Based on the 2020 electoral map and internal campaign assessments, Trump could return to the White House by winning three battleground states: Georgia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. Under that scenario, the former president could lose the remaining four battleground states and still win re-election.

For Ms. Harris, winning 35 electoral votes from Georgia and Pennsylvania would easily put her close to the 270-vote threshold. Winning just one of the four states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina or Arizona would make her the first female president of the United States.

“Election officials here have been talking to Madisonians and attorneys. They said let's make sure there's no doubt and that part of that process will be redone,” Fleming said.

He said all the scanners will be reset to zero and ballots will be run through them again, which could add hours to the count. But the most time-consuming part of the counting process is processing absentee ballots and their envelopes, and they won’t have to do that again.

The problem with these machines was due to human error and “we don’t think they were tampered with in any way,” Fleming noted. “We don’t want there to be any question about the accuracy of the results. So we’re going to make sure they’re done properly.”

"I know it sounds creepy, but a lot of people are skeptical about the election process, thinking that there are voters who are no longer alive and still on the ballot. We need to be careful," said Tonnie Adams, supervisor of elections in Heard County, a battleground state in Georgia.

Every day, Tonnie Adams had to comb local funeral home websites, read every obituary in the newspaper and write down the names of the deceased, removing them from the voter rolls.

Although cases of voter fraud using dead people's names to vote are rare, US election officials are particularly vigilant because the entire voting process is closely monitored by the public.

Many states require public voter lists so that people can monitor and detect irregularities in the voting process, especially in the seven battleground states that are considered to be the places that decide the outcome.

During the 2020 election, former President Donald Trump claimed that thousands of "dead voters" still voted for president, raising suspicions of election fraud, although without basis.

Lessie Benningfield Randle, another survivor of the massacre, said last week that she voted absentee for Vice President Harris.

"I don't know how much longer I have left, but if this is my last vote, I'm grateful it's for Kamala Harris," said Benningfield Randle, 109. "I have five children and over 20 grandchildren. Vice President Harris has a better chance of building the country I want my grandchildren to inherit."

Voting hours were extended in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, after a “software issue” disrupted voter ballot scanning, the county Board of Elections announced on November 5. It was the first reported problem with the voting machine system on Election Day.

However, county election officials stressed they "have a process in place to address issues of this nature" and voters casting ballots in their precincts "should not be discouraged" by such an incident.

"The Cambria County Board of Elections has called in information technology experts to review the software issue. All completed ballots will be accepted, secured and counted by the Board of Elections," the board said in a statement.

Dave Luciew, who voted in Geistown, Cambria County, said he was surprised to find his polling place empty this morning, until he learned why.

“People came out of the room saying the voting machines were broken,” Luciew said. “After going inside to confirm the problem, we decided to wait until the system was back up and running.”

However, voters can still continue to vote by paper ballot as usual, while authorities handle technical issues.

"We are working with the county to resolve this issue and are committed to ensuring a free, fair, safe and secure election," said Matt Heckel, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Elections.

  • November 5, 2024 20:02'Young voters increasingly support Mr. Trump'

Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said Mr Trump’s campaign had attracted greater attention from groups of voters who traditionally voted Democratic, including blacks, Latinos and Gen Z.

Gen Z wants America to stay away from foreign conflicts and the threat of World War III, he said. They want economic growth and lower housing costs, issues Ramaswamy said are most important to young Americans.

“If the US engages in a foreign war, the burden will fall on Gen Z. And with that, costs will go up. What we’ve seen over the past few years is rising prices and wages not keeping up. That’s the harsh reality,” he said.

Asked whether Trump should concede if he lost, Ramaswamy said "a win is a win, a loss is a loss," but said Harris and the Democrats had "sabotaged" the 2020 election.

  • November 5, 2024 19:33Trump's advisor: Success or failure depends on voter turnout

"If the people we think are going to vote for President Trump turn out to vote, he's going to win. So what matters now is turnout. It's very close," said a senior Trump adviser. "Turnout is really the only thing we're focused on right now."

Advisers believe this is Trump's best showing yet, especially when compared to polls from 2016 and 2020. However, one issue that worries them when looking at poll data is that there are fewer "silent voters" supporting Trump this year than in the previous two elections.

“Silent voters” are those who support a candidate but do not want to tell others, including pollsters or even family members. This is considered an unexpected factor that can change the outcome of the election, contrary to the predictions of the survey units.

  • November 5, 2024 18:26Predicting the winning chances of the two candidates

Election analyst Nate Silver’s team ran their final election prediction model at midnight on November 5. Out of 80,000 simulations, Harris won 40,012 times, or 50.015%, and lost 39,988 times, or 49.985%. Of these, Trump won 39,718 times. The remaining 270 scenarios involved a tie in the electoral vote, with each candidate receiving 269 votes.

If there is a tie, the House of Representatives decides the winner by holding a runoff election. Each state delegation has one vote, and the candidate who wins 26 or more of the 50 votes is elected president.

The cold front will continue to move east, bringing showers to Minnesota and the battleground states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Louisiana. In previous elections, rain and wind have caused a slight decrease in voter turnout.

Speaking at his final campaign rally in Grand Rapids this year, Mr. Trump raised the issue of immigration, saying that America was suffering from a "criminal invasion" and that it needed to end immediately.

He then turned to Harris, saying "nobody knows who she is." Trump also criticized other Democrats such as President Joe Biden, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Adam Schiff, who led the first impeachment inquiry into him.

  • November 5, 2024 06:35Ready for the presidential election

Three towns in New Hampshire, Dixville Notch, Hart's Location and Millsfield, were the first to open for voting at midnight on November 5 (12:00 Hanoi time). Most states began opening polling places at 6:00.

In some areas of Vermont, voters can vote as early as 5 a.m. In Iowa, residents of some counties have to wait until noon to vote, depending on the decision of local election officials.

Voting for president on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November is a tradition that dates back nearly 180 years and continues to this day.

The US has about 244 million eligible voters this year, of which more than 74 million have already voted early.

Polls nationwide and in battleground states show the race between Republican Donald Trump, 78, and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, 60, is so tight that it could lead to recounts in some places.

This year, states' focus on accuracy and safety in the vote counting process may slow down the announcement of results, making it likely that the winning candidate will not be named on the night of November 5.

Experts say the president-elect can only be determined on the morning of November 6 or a few days later.
