On January 3, New York (USA) judge Juan Merchan said President-elect Donald Trump will be sentenced in the criminal hush money case on January 10, just 10 days before he returns to the White House.

President-elect Trump will have the option of attending in person or via video conference when a New York court sentences him in a case involving falsifying business records to pay hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election, Judge Merchan said.

In an 18-page ruling, Judge Merchan upheld the decision of a New York jury that found Mr. Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records to pay to cover up unfavorable information during his 2016 election campaign.

However, the judge said he was leaning towards not imposing a prison sentence.

Mr Trump's legal team is expected to appeal, a move that could delay sentencing.

Mr. Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Mr. Trump, said that Judge Merchan should not have sentenced the President-elect, accusing the judge's ruling of violating the President's immunity.

“This case, which lacks legal basis, should never have been brought to trial and the Constitution requires that the case be dismissed immediately,” he said.
