US President-elect Donald Trump's team is considering pursuing direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Yonhap reported on November 27 that US President-elect Donald Trump's team is considering "pursuing direct talks" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in hopes of minimizing the risk of armed conflict.
According to Yonhap, some members of President-elect Trump's team believe that his direct approach is the most likely to break the ice in relations with the North Korean leader. However, Trump has not yet made a final decision on the issue.
During his second presidential campaign, Mr. Trump alluded to a policy of pursuing direct relations with the North Korean leader and mentioned his personal relationship with Mr. Kim Jong Un.
Still, some have expressed skepticism about the prospects of a resumption of a summit between Mr Trump and Mr Kim Jong Un, citing North Korea’s rapidly expanding nuclear and missile programs, Pyongyang’s close ties with Moscow, and more pressing security concerns for the US — such as the Russia-Ukraine war.
