Chinese netizens angrily criticized a man who threw a pomegranate at his son's stomach out of anger while tutoring him, causing the boy's spleen to rupture.
According toWenzhou Urban Daily, a man surnamed Tran in Wenzhou (Zhejiang Province, China) was helping his son Liangliang (a primary school student) with his homework while his wife was working overtime. When his son could not grasp the solution to a math problem, Mr. Tran lost his temper and picked up a pomegranate from the table and threw it at Liangliang in the stomach.
The boy screamed in pain but endured it. The next day, Liangliang had severe abdominal pain and was taken to the hospital. Examination revealed that the child had a ruptured spleen.
Doctors warn that the spleen is very susceptible to rupture, which in some cases can lead to life-threatening bleeding and may require the organ to be removed.
Chinese netizens harshly criticized the father for his impatience and violent behavior when teaching his child.
“This father ruined his son’s life! The removal of the spleen is irreversible damage”; “This reminds me of when I was a child, my father threw the remote control at me, I was almost paralyzed”; “Why should parents be responsible for tutoring their children’s homework? This should be the school’s responsibility”…, Weibo users commented.
In China, causing serious injury by negligence can be punished by up to three years in prison. However, if the victim and their family do not report it, the police will not intervene and the case will be dropped.
He Bo, a lawyer from Sichuan Hongqi Law Firm, told the newspaper.Post:“In situations identified as domestic violence or constituting a crime, even if the victim or the victim's family does not proactively report to the police, when the act is discovered by relevant organizations or individuals, they are also responsible for reporting it.
Everyone is equal before the law, regardless of the relationship between family members, and domestic violence is strictly prohibited,” he added.
In China, it is common for parents to tutor their children with homework. According to a 2020 survey, parents of primary school students spent an average of 7.19 hours per week tutoring their children with homework. According to the 2020 China Language Education Development Report, more than half of students felt their learning was limited by parental tutoring.
Parents losing their temper while helping their children with homework has caused many accidents. In April, a mother in Jiangsu Province, China, became so angry while helping her son with his homework that she kicked him, but instead hit the wall and broke her toe.
A similar incident occurred in September 2021, when a man in Hunan province, China, got so angry while tutoring his daughter that he dislocated his jaw.
