Citing an announcement from the US State Department on April 20, AFP news agency said that Secretary of State Blinken will begin his visit to Shanghai and Beijing from April 24. This is the second visit to China in less than a year by the head of the US State Department. During the three-day visit, Secretary of State Blinken will meet with senior Chinese officials, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi. A meeting between Secretary of State Blinken and Chinese President Xi Jinping is also expected to take place. However, neither side has confirmed this.

In a statement, the US State Department said Secretary Blinken will discuss a range of bilateral, regional and global issues, including the situation in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, the situation in the East Sea and the Taiwan Strait.

According to State Department spokesman Mathew Miller, Secretary Blinken will also address progress made in resuming cooperation on counternarcotics, military communications, artificial intelligence and will reaffirm the importance of the United States and China managing competition responsibly even in areas where the two countries disagree.

The visit follows a phone call this month between President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, in which the two leaders pledged to maintain high-level contact. Since the call, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has visited China and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has spoken by phone with his Chinese counterpart. Lower-level meetings have also taken place.

Despite the meetings between officials from both sides, the bilateral relationship remains fraught with challenges. The US has recently become more vocal in calling on China to stop supporting Russia’s military industry.

Secretary Blinken also pressed China to urge Iran not to escalate tensions in the Middle East. He has spoken to his Chinese counterpart several times since the Israel-Hamas war began six months ago, seeking China’s help in persuading Iran to rein in its proxies in the region. The issue has taken on new urgency since Iran and Israel launched direct attacks on each other’s territory this past week.
