With the 2023 Asian gold medal won on June 12, Nguyen Thi That has become the first racer in Vietnamese cycling history to get her hands on a ticket to an Olympic tournament.
Nguyen Thi That won the 2023 Asian Championship
On June 12, Nguyen Thi That won the women's mass start event of the 2023 Asian Road Cycling Championship in Thailand. In this event, female cyclists have to compete on a 109km route. Supporting That in the Vietnamese team's jersey are Nguyen Thi Thi, Nguyen Thi Thu Mai, and Tran Thi Thuy Trang.
Supported by his teammates throughout the journey, That had a perfect sprint, surpassing his Chinese opponent Sun Jiajun and Southeast Asian rival Jutatip Maneephan (Thailand) to reach the finish line first, winning the gold medal.
Nguyen Thi That has a ticket to the 2024 Olympics
On the afternoon of June 12, coach of the Vietnamese women's cycling team Huynh Van Chanh said: "This victory helps That win a place at the 2024 Olympics in France. That will compete as the Asian champion."
Nguyen Thi That is sure to win a place at the 2024 Olympics
However, this is a place for athletes from countries that cannot qualify for the Olympics through the International Cycling Union (UCI) rankings or at the world championships. Therefore, That must wait for the final confirmation from the UCI.
Mr. Tran Hai Trieu - General Secretary of the An Giang Sports Motorbike Federation, acting manager of That's Loc Troi Group cycling team - shared: "In the previous Olympics, That tried very hard but missed the ticket to the Tokyo Olympics at the last minute. Part of that was because the training and competition process was affected by the Covid-19 epidemic. But this year, That has realized his goal."
Thus, Nguyen Thi That will be the first Vietnamese athlete to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. At the same time, she will also be the first racer in the history of Vietnamese road cycling to participate in an Olympic Games.
