Nguyen Thi That completed the 158km road race at the 2024 Paris Olympics in more than 4 hours.
On the evening of August 4, athlete Nguyen Thi That finished in 73rd place in the 158km road race at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The result of Vietnam's number 1 cyclist was 4 hours 10 minutes 47 seconds, 11 minutes more than the first place winner Kristen Faulkner.
The American cyclist made a spectacular breakthrough in the last 10km, bringing home the gold medal for the US with a time of 3 hours 59 minutes 23 seconds. The two athletes right after Faulkner were Marianne Vos (Netherlands - silver medal) and Lotte Kopecky (Belgium - bronze medal).
Although she could not compete for a medal, Nguyen Thi That's fighting spirit was commendable. She was at a disadvantage as the only athlete from the Vietnamese delegation participating in the 158km long-distance event, while countries like Belgium, the Netherlands, and France all had 4 to 5 representatives competing together. The Vietnamese cyclist was at the back of the race at one point, but she made an effort to complete the entire 158km distance after more than 4 hours of cycling.
The last athlete to finish was Phetdarin Somrat (Thailand), with a time of 4 hours 13 minutes 42 seconds. Under the scorching Paris sun, 14 out of 92 athletes dropped out halfway.
Nguyen Thi That is the 14th athlete of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, Vietnam has yet to win any medals at this year's Olympics.
Shooter Trinh Thu Vinh was the most successful, reaching the finals in both events. However, the girl from Thanh Hoa stopped outside the top 3.
Vietnam's only hope in Paris is weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh competing in the men's under-61kg weightlifting event on August 7, and athlete Nguyen Thi Huong competing in the canoeing qualifying round of the women's 200m single sculls event on August 8.
