According to Potilico, French MP Raphael Glucksmann of the Socialist and Democratic group said that the US should return to France the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of the US that France gave in 1886.

Speaking at a party congress, Mr Glucksmann said the US had chosen to side with governments that he said lacked respect for liberal values. He stressed that the statue was given as a gift, but if the US no longer valued the values it represented, France could take it back.

Glucksmann, a French MEP who has taken a pro-Ukrainian stance, spoke after Washington suspended aid to Ukraine. While that aid has since been restored, the Trump administration’s stance on Russia and its relations with world leaders continue to be a source of contention within Europe.

In addition to political issues, Mr. Glucksmann also mentioned the policy towards scientific researchers in the US. He commented that if Washington continues to implement tough policies towards scholars and experts, France is ready to welcome capable individuals so that they can continue their work in a more favorable environment.

The Statue of Liberty, located in New York Harbor, has long been a symbol of freedom and welcome. An inscription at the base of the statue expresses the desire to welcome immigrants seeking new opportunities. However, the US government has recently introduced a number of restrictive immigration policies, including tighter controls on foreigners and plans to deport those without legal documents.
