On February 3, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern about the risk of further escalation of conflict in the Middle East after the US carried out airstrikes in Iraq and Syria.
Speaking to the press, Mr. Stephane Dujarric - spokesman for the UN Secretary-General - stated: "Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is concerned about the risk of further escalation of the conflict.
He urged all parties involved to take concrete steps to de-escalate tensions, while taking into account the human and economic costs of a conflict spreading to a region already marked by violence."
The statement was made after the White House confirmed that the US Air Force launched attacks on 85 targets in Iraq and Syria on February 2.
According to White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, the attack involved B-1 strategic bombers, using more than 125 precision-guided munitions.
