UN Security Council holds emergency meeting on Russia-Ukraine conflict

On the afternoon of December 30 (New York time), at Russia's request, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held an emergency meeting to discuss new developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Addressing the members of the Security Council, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding, Mr. Khaled Khiari, stressed that the UN strongly condemns all attacks on cities, towns and villages in Ukraine as well as in the Russian Federation.

Mr. Khaled Khiari affirmed that attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in violation of international humanitarian law are unacceptable and must end immediately.

According to Mr. Khiari, the Russian city of Belgorod, located about 40km from the Ukrainian border, was attacked on December 30, killing at least 18 civilians and injuring more than 100 others.

A day earlier, Ukraine announced that Russian airstrikes on the country had also killed dozens of civilians and injured many others.
