Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned that World War III is getting closer as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) increases military support for Ukraine.

On his Telegram page on July 11, Mr. Medvedev emphasized that the West's increased supply of weapons to Ukraine "cannot lead to anything other than a dead end and the approaching Third World War."

Mr Medvedev's comments came on the same day a NATO summit opened in Lithuania, where several countries pledged to provide more weapons and financial support to Ukraine.

Also on July 11, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called on NATO to promote a ceasefire and peace talks in Ukraine instead of continuing to send weapons to Kiev. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said: "Instead of bringing weapons to Ukraine, we should bring peace. A ceasefire is necessary. Instead of war, peace talks should start as soon as possible."

The Hungarian leader stressed that NATO has a duty to protect its members, "not to carry out military actions on the territory of other countries."

He also urged NATO leaders to uphold the military alliance's official "defense" mission.

Earlier, on July 7, the US announced for the first time that it would provide cluster munitions to Ukraine in its latest military aid package. This move was met with strong opposition from many parties, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Germany also pledged an additional 700 million euros ($771 million) in military aid to Ukraine on the first day of the NATO summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country will join the UK in providing long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine.

According to Reuters (UK), a French diplomatic source said the parties are discussing 50 SCALP missiles produced by European manufacturer MBDA. Meanwhile, a French military source revealed that these missiles will be taken from France's existing military reserves and that it will be a "significant number."

Ukraine has been asking for long-range missiles for months, but the United States, its main supplier, has yet to agree to them.
