Having won first prize in the IT subject at the national competition for excellent students last January, Nguyen Hai An, a student at Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted (Hai Duong), shared that his secret to studying is to appreciate the subject.
Must respect the subject
An has loved computers and technology since he was a child, often exposed to computers through recreational activities such as watching videos, playing games, etc. As a student at Le Quy Don Secondary School (Hai Duong City), An loved computer science even more when he joined the computer science club at school.
To continue nurturing his passion, An determinedly studied and passed the entrance exam to the specialized IT class of Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted. An affirmed his ability when he won a prize at the provincial level IT competition for 10th grade students.
Although he was quiet and somewhat different from his friends, An's inner strength caught the attention of his teachers. In grade 11, An was selected to be part of the national excellent student competition team of Hai Duong province. Also in this school year, An took the exam to advance to a higher level and won the national excellent student encouragement prize.
To accumulate knowledge as well as practice skills in studying and taking exams, An participated in many provincial, regional and national competitions. At these competitions, An won many high achievements. These are: gold medal in grade 11, silver medal in grade 12 for excellent students in the coastal region of the Northern Delta; silver medal in the 2023 National Natural Science Olympiad; third prize in the 2024 Informatics Olympic Super Cup; first prize in the National Youth Informatics Competition and the Hai Duong Provincial Youth Informatics Competition in 2024...
Notably, An has won the first prize in information technology at the national high school competition for excellent students in the 2024-2025 school year. This is also the only first prize out of 97 prizes of Hai Duong province in this national playground. With this result, An is also 1 of 4 representatives of Hai Duong to enter the second round of selecting the national team to compete internationally.
Sharing her study secrets, An said: “Passion and love are not enough, you have to respect the subject. From respecting the subject, you will have a positive attitude and behavior towards the subject. When you respect the subject, you will have a plan, specific goals, high aspirations, wanting to be the leader in that subject, that field.”
Combining different subjects
Computer science is a special subject, a combination of many different subjects. Therefore, An studies math well to supplement his thinking skills, and English well to supplement his search for foreign documents. In particular, An often watches English videos to learn how to pronounce and use standard syntax. An also spends time studying literature, chemistry and physics well to supplement his computer science.
After winning the national consolation prize in grade 11, as well as other competitions, An focused on overcoming her weaknesses to improve her skills. "In the learning process, you need to master the basic knowledge before moving on to advanced knowledge," An added.
An said that in addition to absorbing knowledge, skills, and experience from teachers, one must also focus on self-study, finding topics to practice, practicing a variety of topics, and always asking why with each solution.
After each practice test, you need to draw experience and problem-solving methods so that when you enter the exam room, you can solve any problem. If you cannot solve a problem, ask your teacher.
An shared that she does not study too late and always keeps a distance from her subjects. An always balances between studying and entertainment. Usually, An studies until 10 pm at the latest. Most of the day, An studies at school, when she comes home, she mainly entertains herself by walking, listening to music...
An is currently continuing to strive for the goal of being selected for the national excellent student team for international competitions in the second round. An plans to study at Hanoi University of Science and Technology after graduating from high school.
Mr. Le Thanh Binh, the teacher who trained the national team of excellent students in IT of Hai Duong province, has been leading the team for 25 years. Mr. Binh has brought the Hai Duong team 5 first prizes at the national level; 1 silver medal and 1 bronze medal at the international level.
Sharing about his student, Mr. Binh said: “I have a connection with An’s family because An’s older brother was also my student at Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted. Unlike his older brother, An is quiet and very special. He has a very high ability to self-study. An has the mindset to discover unique and creative ways to solve problems. I hope An will go further in the selection round for the international team.”
