The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that this week, media conglomerate Meta will provide end-to-end encryption for users' messages on Facebook.

Meta will fully encrypt messages on its Facebook and Instagram social media apps by default, according to WSJ sources. However, Instagram will switch to encryption later, possibly in early 2024.

Meta Group has not yet responded to Reuters' request for comment on this information.

The change means Facebook and Instagram users no longer need to separately enable end-to-end encryption, which allows messages to be read only by the sender and recipient.

Meta says encryption can help keep users safe from hackers, scammers and criminals.

End-to-end encryption is now a controversial feature among media companies and many governments.

The UK government in September urged Meta not to roll out encryption on Instagram and Facebook Messenger unless there were safeguards in place to protect children from sexual abuse.
