Mother with mild disability raising child with severe disability

When we arrived, Ms. Hien was not home. Ms. Vu Thi Quyen, Ms. Hien's sister-in-law, who lives next door, said that Ms. Hien had gone to herd buffalo and had not returned yet. There were only two children at home.

According to Ms. Quyen, Ms. Hien has been slow to develop since childhood. Growing up, although she did not start a family, she had 2 children, Nguyen Le Anh Tu (born in 2013) and Nguyen Le Tu Anh (born in 2015). Since birth, Anh Tu has been slow to develop and has received the severe disability policy. Although the family sent him to school, due to his slowness, he is still only in first grade. Tu Anh is more agile than him, but still not as fast as her peers.

Due to limited awareness, Ms. Hien does not know how to take care of her children. Everything from bathing, studying, to cooking and cleaning the house is done by Ms. Quyen's family. Although Ms. Hien works as a hired buffalo herder to earn an income, it is not worth much because she works one day and rests the next. In addition, there are times when she lets the buffaloes get lost or eat trees and crops of the people. The income of Ms. Hien and her three children mainly comes from subsidies for the disabled and assistance from the People's Committee of Chi Linh City.

Hien and her children often get sick and have to go to the hospital and buy supplies and books for their children to study, so this amount of money is not enough. Fortunately for Hien's family, they have relatives to help them, so they have a solid house to live in. However, inside there is nothing of value except a bed because Hien does not know how to clean the house and does not have money to buy furniture.

“I worry about the future of my two children, as they grow up. Sometimes I am busy with family matters so I can only help a very small part,” said Ms. Quyen.

Mr. Nguyen Van Khuyen, a civil servant in charge of labor, war invalids and social affairs in Van An ward, said: “This is one of the households with difficult circumstances in the locality, as Ms. Hien herself is disabled, has limited awareness and takes care of 2 children, one of whom is severely disabled. Although the locality and her family actively help Ms. Hien, life is still difficult and needs the support of benefactors so that Ms. Hien and her children can have a more fulfilling life.”
