Mother left, father worked far away, and Truong Khanh Ly (11 years old) in Dai Hop commune (Tu Ky) herself suffered from lupus erythematosus.
Khanh Ly is being treated at the Pediatrics Department, Bach Mai Hospital. Mr. Truong Huu Ngo (58 years old), Ly's grandfather who is taking care of her, said that Ly's illness progressed quite quickly and unexpectedly. Right on November 20, 2023, she showed signs of fatigue and her eyes were swollen, so her family took her to a clinic near her home. The doctors suspected that she had lupus erythematosus and advised her family to transfer her to a higher level. Immediately after that, the family took her to Bach Mai Hospital for hospitalization. Here, the doctors concluded that she had lupus erythematosus with complications in other organs, with fluid in the lungs, liver and kidney damage. She has had to receive intensive treatment at the hospital since then. Continuous fever and cough, and bloody urine have tormented her for many days.
Sharing about his granddaughter's pitiful situation, Mr. Ngo added that when Ly was just 3 years old, her mother disappeared to follow the Church of God, leaving her to her grandparents to take care of. Her father went to work in Taiwan but business was difficult, so since he went there he has not been able to send money back. All of Ly's living expenses and school fees depend on her grandparents' 4 sao of rice. Therefore, since her granddaughter was hospitalized, the family has been in even more trouble. Her grandparents have had to run around everywhere to find money to pay for her hospital fees.
"I feel sorry for my little granddaughter who could not live fully in the love of her parents, and now has to live in the torment of illness. As grandparents, they don't know where to turn when they are old and have no money," Mr. Ngo said sadly.
In addition to taking care of their hospitalized grandchild, Mr. Ngo and his wife still have to take care of their mentally ill sister who is bedridden. The family was already short of people, and now all the burden falls on the shoulders of the elderly couple.
Khanh Ly confided: "My grandparents are the only people who love me the most and have raised me since I was little. They are old and weak but still have to take care of me. I just hope my illness will improve so that they will worry less and I can soon return to class with my friends. I can also help my grandparents when they are old."
Mr. Nguyen Tien Hiep, Principal of Dai Hop Secondary School, said: "Ly is a good student, has good academic performance, and often helps friends despite extremely difficult circumstances. Since hearing that she had to be hospitalized, the school has come to encourage her. The school hopes that benefactors will share the difficulties with her family and help her have funds for medical treatment."
