Mazda will stop producing D-segment sedans in Japan next April.
Current generation Mazda6 in Japan
On its website, the Japanese automaker has made clear its plans for the Mazda6 (both sedan and wagon) in the domestic market. Accordingly, Mazda6 will stop production in mid-April.
The first generation of Mazda6, called Atenza in Japan, was launched in May 2002 and conveyed the message "Zoom-Zoom" as well as fully embodying the brand's DNA. Now, after 22 years, Mazda6 is in its third generation.
The company did not mention the reason for stopping production. But the cause seems to stem from the age of the Mazda6, the product's obsolescence despite still having a certain number of customers.
"The success of the Atenza and Mazda6 is thanks to the love of many customers over a long period of time, with a total of 226,437 units sold in Japan. The CX wagon series will take on this role, and we will continue to bring vivid experiences to customers through a driving experience that is in tune with the times," said Kazuyoshi Todo, Mazda's domestic sales director.
The statement suggests that Mazda will increase its production of SUVs and crossovers. SUVs are a dominant force in the auto industry, attracting more customers and bringing more profits to manufacturers.
Although the Mazda6 will be discontinued in April, customers can still order the car before the product is completely discontinued.
Before stopping sales in Japan, the Mazda6 was discontinued in the US in 2021 and in the UK in 2023.
In Vietnam, Mazda6 is currently sold in 3 versions, priced from 779-914 million VND and only has a sedan version, no wagon version.
