Lucky to go with it, Real Madrid struggles to keep the top spot

The match between Real and Mallorca in the 19th round of La Liga ended with a minimal victory for the home team with a goal in the final minutes of the match by center-back Antonio Rudiger.

Goal

Real Madrid:Rudiger (78')

Real Madrid beat Mallorca 1-0 at the Bernabeu in their first match of 2024 to stay top of the table in a two-horse race with Girona for the La Liga title.

Centre-back Antonio Rudiger's 78th-minute header - the German's first La Liga goal since scoring against the same opponents in April 2023 - was enough to earn Real all three points on an evening they did not quite deserve.

Neither team looked sharp in front of goal and surprisingly it was the visitors Mallorca who came closest to breaking the deadlock, twice shaking Andriy Lunin's goal with finishes from Antonio Sanchez (42') and Samu (54').

For Real Madrid, on the day striker Vinicius Junior returned for the first time after nearly two months of injury, the home team was the one who controlled the game on the field with superior ball possession (67%), launched more shots but did not cause too much danger to goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic's goal.

Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Brahim Diaz and Vinicius all tested Rajkovic throughout the match but failed and had a very unlucky day. The turning point only came in the 78th minute when Real Madrid were awarded a corner kick. Modric crossed for Rudiger to jump high and head the ball dangerously, leaving the Mallorca goalkeeper standing still as he watched the ball go into the net.

Bellingham's explosive goalscoring form since his move to the Bernabeu has been the perfect foil to the fact that Real Madrid have yet to find a suitable replacement for Karim Benzema. With Bellingham out of the picture, goals have become scarcer for Los Blancos and it's clear that bringing in a truly outstanding No.9 is something President Florentino Perez needs to do right away if he wants to secure the La Liga title race and aim for the Champions League.
