In the final match of round 6 of the Premier League, Man Utd lost 0-3 to visiting team Tottenham.
The home team lost heavily without scoring, the captain received a red card and young star Kobbie Mainoo was injured, Man Utd had a forgettable 90 minutes right at Old Trafford. More than half of the audience left before the match ended, because the "Red Devils" could have lost more heavily if striker Timo Werner had not wasted the opportunity. But this result was enough to make Erik ten Hag's team fall to 12th place in the Premier League, with a goal difference of minus 3.
Ten Hag left Amad on the bench to start Alejandro Garnacho alongside Marcus Rashford with the clear intention of defending and counter-attacking. However, it was Rashford and Garnacho who missed the chance to counter-attack in the third minute by giving way to each other, allowing centre-back Micky van de Ven to steal the ball leading to the opening goal.
Ven is the fastest player in the Premier League, with a top speed of 37.38 km/h. From his own half, the Dutch centre-back sprinted straight into the Man Utd penalty area without being tackled. He then crossed for Brennan Johnson to tap into an empty net from close range.
Despite being behind, Man Utd rarely got the ball past the halfway line. The Red Devils' best chance came in the 37th minute when Rashford's cross for Garnacho to volley against the post and bounced out. But Tottenham also wasted chances, including Johnson's shot hitting the post and Werner's shot from a one-on-one situation that hit goalkeeper Andre Onana's leg.
The match was decided in the first half, when Fernandes received a straight red card in the 42nd minute. When rushing to tackle James Maddison, the home captain slipped and then raised his leg high, hitting his opponent. Referee Chris Kavanagh seemed to think Fernandes had stepped on Maddison's shin, so he issued a straight red card. Slow-motion replays showed that the Portuguese midfielder appeared to have tripped his opponent, but VAR Peter Bankes did not intervene in the situation.
The incident summed up Fernandes' lacklustre displays since the start of the season, when he has not been at his best. On social media, many Man Utd fans were happy that the 29-year-old midfielder will miss the next three matches against Aston Villa, Brentford and West Ham. Meanwhile, Tottenham fans sang in unison: "You'll be crying in a minute" when they saw Fernandes walking down the tunnel.
Man Utd's performance makes British newspapersGuardianhad to mock after the first half: "Twente just celebrated a 1-1 draw with Man Utd in the Europa League last week. But seeing the current exhausted Ten Hag army, the Dutch club will be disappointed not to win."
Tottenham added to the home team's woes early in the second half when Dejan Kulusevski fired in an unmarked rebound from close range. The Swedish player has shone for the visitors this season, playing in a new position as a right-sided central midfielder. In the stands, some Man Utd fans shook their heads, some bowed their heads in contemplation. Coach Ten Hag looked cold, while the home team's leadership in the stands showed no emotion.
Tottenham added another goal from a corner in the 77th minute, when striker Dominic Solanke tapped in from close range after Pape Matar Sarr's header. And when Man Utd had two set-pieces to cross into the penalty area, midfielder Christian Eriksen hit the wall on both occasions.
This defeat also means Ten Hag is at risk of being fired, when the home team only won two, drew one and lost three in the first six games of the season.
