Midfielder Scott McTominay will move to the Italian league to play for Napoli, coached by Antonio Conte.
According to the newspaperAthleticOn August 25, Man Utd will receive 33 million USD from Napoli - the Serie A champion of the 2022-2023 season.
The contract between Man Utd and McTominay is valid until June 2025 with a one-year extension clause. If not sold and extended, the "Red Devils" could lose him for free next summer. McTominay is a player who came up through the academy. Therefore, the transfer will bring in a large profit, helping the "Red Devils" better comply with the Financial Regulations of the Premier League and UEFA.
The sale of McTominay also helps Man Utd create budget space to buy Manuel Ugarte from PSG. The Board of Directors and coach Erik Ten Hag highly value Ugarte's ability to block from a distance, who can replace veteran Casemiro when needed. The transfer fee for the Uruguayan midfielder is around 50 million USD.
Last season, McTominay scored 10 goals in 43 games for Man Utd, a personal best. The 27-year-old midfielder has also scored eight international goals since March 2023, and was Scotland's only scorer at Euro 2024.
However, McTominay is weak in intercepting from a distance. Therefore, when Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo play well, the Scottish player is always left out.
This summer, Man Utd sold seven players for nearly $80 million. In contrast, they spent $180 million to buy Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.
In addition to McTominay, Napoli are also negotiating to buy Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea and Billy Gilmour from Brighton. What these three players have in common is that they have played time in England, where coach Antonio Conte has led Chelsea and Tottenham. Last season, Napoli fell to 10th in Serie A. Conte joined the team in July with the ambition of returning to the Top 4.
