The strange rule of the Copa America 2024 final

If the official time passes without a winner being determined, the Copa America 2024 final will go into extra time, something that has not happened in previous knockout matches.

The Copa America final has a different format than other knockout matches.

On the morning of July 15 (Hanoi time), Argentina and Colombia will face each other at Hard Rock Stadium, USA. If the two teams are tied after 90 minutes, they will go into extra time with a total duration of 30 minutes. If the winner is still not revealed, the two sides will go to a penalty shootout.

This will not happen in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and third-place matches, where teams will go straight to penalties if they are tied after 90 minutes. This is different to EURO 2024 or other major tournaments.

That means extra time will only be used in the final. According to AS, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) announced the strange rule before the 2024 Copa America kicked off.

In the final of the tournament, Argentina and Colombia will face each other to determine the champion of the world's oldest national team tournament. There, the clash between the two conductors wearing the number 10 shirt and captaining both teams, Lionel Messi and James Rodriguez, will attract attention.

The two sides' journeys to the final were quite contrasting. While Argentina easily won the group stage and only faced weaker opponents in the knockout round, Colombia had to overcome a group containing Brazil and a semi-final against a high-flying Uruguay.
