Suarez plays hero, Uruguay wins third place match of Copa America 2024

Uruguay had a difficult time defeating Canada in the third-place match of Copa America 2024.

The two teams played openly after the opening whistle. Canada was somewhat more dominant, however, the opening goal belonged to Uruguay.

In the 8th minute, Uruguay players took a corner kick from the left wing. Manuel Ugarte headed the ball to Rodrigo Bentancur. The Tottenham player turned and shot into the top of the Canadian net.

Ten minutes later, Canada almost doubled the lead. Maximiliano Araujo's close-range shot failed to beat goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.

Canada's attacking efforts were rewarded in the 21st minute. They also scored from a corner kick. Ismael Kone finished with an impromptu shot like a sepak takraw player, bringing the score to an equalizer.

Not long after, Facundo Pellistri scored Uruguay's second goal. However, the referee disallowed the goal because a Uruguayan player was offside earlier.

The two teams played an open game, bringing excitement to the audience in the stadium. During the rest of the first half, the Uruguayan players created more opportunities. However, Darwin Nunez could not take advantage of any of them.

In the second half, the pace of the match remained high. Oluwaseyi and Luis Suarez missed clear opportunities. In the final minutes, Rodrigo Bentancur hit the crossbar of the Canadian goal. Coach Marcelo Bielsa and his players had not yet had time to recover from their regret when they conceded a goal.

In the 80th minute, Theo Bair shot from afar. Sergio Rochet pushed the ball right to Jonathan David's position and the number 10 player did not miss the opportunity, tapping the ball into the net.

It seemed like Uruguay had no chance left, but they unexpectedly found a goal to equalize 2-2 in extra time. The scorer was Luis Suarez.

The two teams decided the winner on penalties. Canada missed two shots, but Uruguay scored all of them to win 4-3. Marcelo Bielsa's team won the match.
