Sri Lanka's Defense Minister Premitha Bandara Tennakoon said on June 3 that 12 people have died and over 87,000 have been affected by recent floods in the South Asian country.
Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Galle and Matara districts in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces were the worst affected, Mr Tennakoon said.
He also said a total of 12 people were killed, including four in Matara, five in Ratnapura and three in Colombo. Five people were also missing.
According to Mr. Tennakoon, there are 119 evacuation and relief centers with 23,700 people affected by the floods taking temporary shelter.
The Meteorological Agency on June 3 forecast rain and thunderstorms will occur in the western, central, southern and northwestern provinces.
Last week, wildlife officials found the bodies of seven drowned baby elephants, the biggest loss of animals in five years.
The impact of the southwest monsoon has caused flooding in the elephant habitat at Dimbulagala, about 250 km northeast of the capital Colombo.
