Switzerland will face defending champions Italy at the Olympiastadion Berlin in the last 16 of UEFA Euro 2024 at 11pm on 29 June. The two teams will meet in a second consecutive EURO finals after meeting in the group stage of Euro 2020.
In history, Italy and Switzerland have met 23 times, in which the Italian team won 10, drew 10 and lost 3 matches. However, in the last 2 meetings, they were unable to beat this opponent. In the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, Italy drew both matches with Switzerland, then only finished second in the group and was eliminated after losing in the play-off round. In terms of form, the Italian team is also somewhat inferior when winning 2, drawing 2, losing 1 in the last 5 matches, while Switzerland won 2 and drew 3.
Switzerland went unbeaten in the group stage and finished behind Germany in Group A. After a 3-1 win in their opening game against Hungary, they drew 1-1 with Scotland and Germany. Interestingly, all five goals were scored by different players.
The defending champions began their campaign with a 2-1 comeback win over Albania but lost 1-0 to Spain in their second match. In their final group game, they drew 1-1 with Croatia, with Mattia Zaccagni scoring an equaliser in the seventh minute of injury time.
The Azzurri have conceded a goal in each of their three group stage games and will be looking to improve on that record. Interestingly, they have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven European Championship games.

Switzerland went unbeaten in the group stage of the tournament for the first time since 2016. They were knocked out in the round of 16 that year. They reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2020, their best performance in the tournament.
Interestingly, all three of their European Championship knockout matches were decided by penalty shootouts.
This match is expected to be a tight affair and will likely go into extra time and a penalty shootout which Italy will likely win.
