German police have identified the suspect in a car crash that injured at least 28 people as a 24-year-old Afghan refugee.

Regarding the serious accident that occurred in Munich, the capital of Bavaria, Germany, on February 13, when a car suddenly drove into a crowd, the city police said that the suspect who drove into the crowd was a 24-year-old Afghan man, and that he was arrested at the scene.

Bavarian state governor Markus Söder said the incident was "suspected to be an attack."

According to police, the incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on February 13 local time, when a car suddenly crashed into the back of a group of service industry workers participating in a protest related to the Verdi union strike in a square near the center of Munich.

At the scene was a badly damaged Mini car, along with debris and shoes of the injured. At least 28 people were injured, including children, some of them seriously.

The incident took place just before the Munich Security Conference - an important event scheduled to open on February 14 and last for 3 days, bringing together the world's top officials to discuss hot global issues. The scene of the crash was about 1.6 km from the conference venue.

A large-scale security operation was launched near Munich Central Station in the immediate aftermath of the incident. Security in the Bavarian capital is expected to be further tightened in the coming days following the incident.
