In an effort to generalize the information and impact of post-COVID-19 symptoms lasting for 4 years since the disease was first identified, the study showed that the estimated economic cost from factors such as health care services, COVID-19 patients being unable to return to work... is about 1,000 billion USD globally per year, equivalent to 1% of global GDP.

In addition, about 6% of adults worldwide have suffered from long-term post-COVID-19 symptoms; many have yet to fully recover, and treating the disease remains one of the biggest challenges.

According to clinical epidemiologist Ziyad Al-Aly at Washington University in St. Louis (USA), co-author of the study and head of the Research and Development Department at the VA St. Louis Health Care System, the above work of him and his colleagues also aims to provide a roadmap for policy and research priorities.

Also participating in this project are several other leading COVID-19 researchers and three leaders of the Patient-Led Research Collaborative, founded by patients with long-term post-COVID-19 symptoms and professional researchers.
