According to the United Nations, up to 10,000 - 15,000 people were killed in ethnic violence in El Geneina city in Sudan's West Darfur in 2023.
A United Nations (UN) report released on January 19 showed that between 10,000 and 15,000 people were killed in ethnic violence in the city of El Geneina in Sudan's West Darfur last year.
The violence was carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its close-knit group of gunmen.
In a report to the Security Council (SC), the independent monitors of the UN sanctions said the above figure was calculated based on intelligence sources, compared with UN estimates that about 12,000 people have been killed in Sudan since the war broke out between the army and RSF forces on April 15, 2023.
Also according to UN figures, about 500,000 people have fled Sudan to eastern Chad.
UN monitors also noted that between April and June last year, the city of El Geneina experienced “intense violence” as RSF gunmen and their allies carried out multiple attacks on the Masalit tribe of African descent.
