According to statistics released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health of Bangladesh on October 1, since the beginning of the year, the country has recorded more than 1,000 deaths due to dengue fever, and this is considered the most serious outbreak of this mosquito-borne disease ever.

DGHS data shows that since January 2023, Bangladesh has confirmed more than 200,000 dengue cases, of which 1,006 have died.

A former DGHS official said the number of deaths due to dengue this year is higher than the number recorded in all previous years combined since 2000 - when the South Asian country witnessed its first dengue outbreak.

Last month, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the current dengue epidemic in Bangladesh is putting great pressure on the country's health system.

According to experts, the rainy season from June to September every year is the time when dengue fever breaks out strongly in Bangladesh - one of the countries with a high risk of this mosquito-borne disease outbreak.

Dengue fever is an infectious disease that commonly occurs in tropical regions, causing high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle pain and in the most dangerous cases, massive bleeding and can lead to death.

The WHO warns that dengue fever and other mosquito-borne viral diseases such as chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika are spreading faster and more widely due to the effects of climate change.
