Over the past year, dozens of PhDs have graduated from universities abroad and returned to work in Vietnam, including a 9X PhD who graduated as valedictorian from the world's top university.
9X Doctor graduated from top US school
Dr. Can Tran Thanh Trung, graduated from the California Institute of Technology (USA) and works at the University of Natural Sciences in Ho Chi Minh City. Can Tran Thanh Trung was born in 1995 and is a former student of the Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University). Trung won the Gold Medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Colombia in 2013.
After high school, Trung received a full scholarship to Duke University (USA) - a school in the top 10 of the best university rankings in the US, according to US News 2024. He graduated as valedictorian in mathematics from this school in 2018.
After that, Mr. Trung did his PhD in mathematics at the California Institute of Technology (USA). According to the THE 2024 rankings, the California Institute of Technology ranked 7th among the best universities in the world. According to the rankings of the Quacquarelli Symonds - QS education organization (UK), this Institute ranked in the top 10 in the world.
Dr. Can Tran Thanh Trung said that since 2016, he and the PiMA group have organized math and application summer camps for high school students across the country. The program aims to introduce modern university-level applied mathematics to high school students and train other soft skills such as teamwork, research, and programming.
To date, many of PiMA’s students have become successful, working for leading technology companies or as postgraduates at major universities around the world. Upon returning home, he has nurtured the desire to gradually develop PiMA into a quality training, research and application center of the University of Natural Sciences.

A representative of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade said that last year, three PhDs who graduated abroad returned to work at the school. The school also has a policy for officials who go to advanced training courses to improve their doctoral qualifications. If the doctoral thesis is ahead of schedule, they will receive 30 million VND in support, and if it is on schedule, they will receive 25 million VND. For officials currently working at the school, when they receive the title of associate professor, they will receive 30 million VND in support, and when they become professors, they will receive 50 million VND.
