Ivory confiscated items were painted black to avoid inspection by authorities.

The smuggled ivory was hidden in an imported container at Lach Huyen International Port (Hai Phong). Notably, to deceive the authorities, the subject painted the ivory black. This is a new method discovered for the first time in the Hai Phong port area and nationwide.

Previously, implementing the direction of the leaders of Hai Phong Customs Department, on March 23, the Customs Control Team (Hai Phong Customs Department) coordinated with the Customs Branch of Dinh Vu Port (Hai Phong Customs Department), the Economic Police Department (Hai Phong City Police), Team 1 (Anti-smuggling Investigation Department, General Department of Customs) to inspect the shipment packed in a suspicious container at Lach Huyen International Port.

The inspection results revealed that many pineapple sacks contained 547 pieces of ivory with a total weight of 1,580 kg. During the investigation and verification process, the Customs force discovered signs that the company named as the recipient of the goods on the bill of lading (with an address in Lang Son) was a "ghost" company.

In recent years, Hai Phong Customs Department has been considered the leading unit in the whole industry in presiding over and arresting ivory smuggling cases, including many large-scale cases.

Typically, on March 20, 2023, Hai Phong Customs presided over the seizure of a case of smuggling more than 7.6 tons of ivory and ivory products. This is the largest ivory smuggling case ever seized at Hai Phong port and also one of the largest ivory seizures in Vietnam in recent years.
