On the morning of March 20, at Nam Hai Dinh Vu port (Hai Phong), Hai Phong Customs Department presided over and coordinated with Hai Phong Police to search a 20-foot container containing ivory smuggled from Africa with an estimated quantity of about 7 tons.
Hai Phong Customs seizes largest ever haul of smuggled ivory
According to a source from the Hai Phong City Customs Department, using professional measures, the Department analyzed and evaluated 6 suspicious containers; in which, it was determined that the shipment of 3 containers (declared as peanuts) had very high risk signs. Specifically, the shipment originated from Angola, was transferred in Singapore to conceal the shipping route; the name of the goods was described in a non-common language and the recipient information was used incorrectly... This is a new, extremely sophisticated trick to evade the control of the Customs agency.
As soon as the goods were unloaded at the port, the Hai Phong Customs Department directed units to conduct key monitoring, inspect the goods using container scanners and manually inspect the entire shipment after analyzing suspicious images. The search results discovered that the container with registration number UACU3786863 contained an estimated 7 tons of ivory, the largest amount ever at Hai Phong port.
It is known that the African ivory seized by the Hai Phong Customs Department under the command of the CITES Appendix I is on the list of prohibited import goods, violating the provisions of Decree No. 69/2018/ND-CP dated May 15, 2018 of the Government. The seizure shows the proactiveness and effectiveness in the research, information collection, and identification of key shipments by the Hai Phong Customs Department, which has promptly prevented the crimes of the subjects, effectively deterring other subjects who intend to illegally trade and transport goods on the CITES list to Vietnam for illegal profits.
The General Department of Customs is continuing to coordinate with relevant forces to verify and clarify for handling according to regulations.
