Spiny cucumbers bring profit from 160-220 million VND/ha

A representative of the Food Crops and Food Plants Experimental Center (Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants) said that up to now, farmers in the province have basically finished harvesting the prickly cucumbers under the project "Research on restoration and development of prickly cucumber varieties to supplement the structure of typical agricultural products of Hai Duong province" implemented by the unit. The yield of the cucumbers is about 35 tons/ha, the selling price is from 13,000-15,000 VND/kg, depending on the time, while the hybrid melons grown locally are sold at 10,000-11,000 VND/kg. Farmers earn a profit of 160-220 million VND/ha of prickly cucumbers.

This spring crop, prickly cucumbers were grown on 40 hectares in 5 communes: Van To (Tu Ky), Hung Long (Ninh Giang), Tan Trao (Thanh Mien), Thong Kenh (Gia Loc) and Quoc Tuan commune (Nam Sach).

The prickly cucumber has been grown by Van To farmers for many years. However, due to many factors, this variety has degenerated. Therefore, the Food Crops and Food Plants Experimental Center has sought to restore it and conduct trial planting in some areas of Hai Duong since 2022.
