About 600 hectares of vegetable cultivation in Hai Duong apply water-saving irrigation

According to the reporter's investigation, by March this year, Hai Duong had about 600 hectares of specialized vegetable cultivation applying water-saving irrigation systems.

In 2017, the vegetable growing area in Pham Kha commune (Thanh Mien) was the first place to apply the water-saving irrigation system. Since 2019, some carrot growing areas in Cam Giang district and onion and bean growing areas in Kinh Mon town have also started applying this system.

In recent years, a series of greenhouse models in Gia Loc, Nam Sach, Hai Duong City, Kim Thanh districts... have applied water-saving irrigation technology to most vegetable production areas.

Water-saving irrigation is simply understood as providing controlled irrigation water for the area of ​​land used for growing crops. Farmers in some vegetable growing areas in Hai Duong are applying some water-saving irrigation techniques such as: drip irrigation (providing water to the soil in the form of small drops from a droplet generator placed on the ground near the base of the plant), localized sprinkler irrigation (providing water to crops in the form of raindrops or dew drops through a system of sprinklers installed throughout the field)...

To apply the above technique, farmers in the province have invested in installing pumps, pipeline systems... Depending on weather conditions, water regulation is actively carried out by farmers with a few simple operations through handheld electronic devices or software installed on mobile phones. Farmers do not need to be present directly in the field but can still operate the water-saving irrigation system remotely within a suitable radius.

Traditional irrigation methods often waste water and erode the soil. Excess irrigation water will seep deep into the ground, washing away a significant amount of fertilizer and organic matter from the root layer. On the contrary, water-saving irrigation technology helps farmers proactively regulate water sources to suit the needs of crops, without excess water or loss during the irrigation process.

According to the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, the application of the above system helps vegetable growing areas save about 30 - 55% of water and increase economic efficiency by 10 - 30% compared to traditional irrigation methods.

Hai Duong has identified a strategy to turn farming into a modern technical economic sector by 2050. Water-saving irrigation may be one of the solutions encouraged to be widely replicated to achieve this goal.
