Prime Minister Sunak, leader of the ruling Conservative Party, has pledged to stop illegal migrants crossing the English Channel from France to the UK. However, according to new figures updated by the UK Home Office, on May 24, 288 migrants crossed the Channel on five boats, bringing the total number of migrants who have crossed the Channel so far in 2024 to 10,170. This is an increase of 35% compared to the same period last year. In addition, the number of undocumented migrants arriving by sea in the UK has also reached a record high in the first five months of 2024.

The figures are not good news for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as he seeks re-election. On May 22, Sunak called a general election for July 4, kicking off a six-week campaign in which immigration has become increasingly important to voters. On May 23, Sunak also admitted that his priority plan to deport thousands of asylum seekers in the UK to Rwanda would not be implemented before polling day.

Meanwhile, the opposition Labour Party has pledged to scrap the controversial plan, calling it costly and ineffective. It has also pointed the finger at high immigration figures and pledged to crack down on people-smuggling operations that profit from small boat journeys.

The results of a public opinion poll released by YouGov on May 25 showed that the British Labour Party is leading the ruling Conservative Party by 22%.
