According to local security officials, terrorists attacked the town of Mahas with explosive-laden vehicles. Their target was a civilian area. All the victims of the two bombings were civilians. Several people were also injured.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks. However, Al-Shabaab militants control large areas of rural Somalia and frequently carry out attacks on civilian, political and military targets in the country. In October 2022, Al-Shabaab carried out two consecutive car bombings in the capital Mogadishu, killing at least 121 people and injuring 333. This was the deadliest attack in the Horn of Africa country in the past five years.
