The Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed five people as they waited in line to receive their salaries at a bank in northern Afghanistan.

IS's propaganda arm said a suicide bomber detonated explosives in his vest when he arrived at the bank to kill Taliban government employees who came to collect their salaries.

The incident occurred at a bank in Kunduz city, the capital of Kunduz province, northern Afghanistan, killing at least 5 people and injuring 7 others. Kunduz provincial police spokesman Jumadin Khaksar confirmed the incident and said the police were coordinating with relevant agencies to investigate.

In March last year, IS carried out a similar bombing outside a bank in the southern city of Kandahar, considered the "spiritual capital" of the Taliban movement. The Taliban government said at the time that the bombing killed three people, but according to hospital sources, the actual death toll could be as high as 20.

Violence has generally declined in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power. However, IS has occasionally carried out attacks targeting Taliban officials and government workers, tourists and foreign diplomats, including a suicide bombing last December that killed the Taliban’s refugee minister, Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, in the capital, Kabul.
