On March 24, US Eastern Time, with 140 votes in favor, 38 abstentions and 5 votes against, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution demanding Russia end the war in Ukraine and calling on the international community to increase humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

The resolution, introduced by Ukraine and sponsored by more than 100 UN member states, is the second to be adopted this March at the 11th special emergency session of the UN General Assembly.

UN member states hope that the second resolution, together with the first resolution adopted on March 2, will have a positive impact on promoting dialogue parties to achieve substantive results and soon move towards a peaceful solution for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said the resolution only reflects what is happening one-sidedly, without mentioning the underlying causes of the crisis.

Also at this session, Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Nations, Sergiy Kyslytsya, shared about the crisis situation in Ukraine and expressed hope that the international community will provide timely, breakthrough support to the people of his country as well as prevent the consequences of the crisis from spreading worldwide.

Ambassador Olof Skoog, Head of the Permanent Mission of the European Union (EU) to the United Nations, said EU countries are currently keeping their borders open to receive people fleeing from Ukraine, regardless of nationality, ethnicity or religion.

Poland's UN Ambassador Joanna Skoczek warned that the consequences of the crisis in Ukraine would not be limited to Ukraine.

Currently, about 2.2 million Ukrainians have migrated to Poland to escape the war.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield affirmed that the adopted resolution demonstrated the solidarity of the international community against the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Resolutions of the 193-member United Nations General Assembly are non-binding, but carry political weight.
