Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro accused of plotting to poison his successor

Brazil's Attorney General Paulo Gonet has formally charged former President Jair Bolsonaro with plotting a coup, including plans to poison his successor, following his defeat in the 2022 election.

According to AP, Brazilian Attorney General Paulo Gonet said on February 18 that former President Jair Bolsonaro knew about and agreed to a plan to poison his successor, current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as part of a coup plot to maintain power.

President Gonet formally accused Mr Bolsonaro of plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election.

He said the plan also aimed to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, an opponent of the former president.

The Supreme Court will consider the charges and if approved, Mr Bolsonaro will have to stand trial. In response, the former Brazilian President has denied all charges.
