Wout Weghorst scored to help the Netherlands beat Ireland 1-0 in the penultimate match of the Euro 2024 qualifiers on the evening of November 18.

In the 12th minute, after a through ball from his teammate in the middle of the field, Weghorst shot into the top corner to score the only goal. The former Man Utd striker scored his eighth goal in 28 international matches. In the first leg in Ireland in September, Weghorst also sealed a 2-1 victory for the Netherlands.

After the opening goal, the Netherlands continued to press the field. However, the home team was ineffective in creating opportunities and finishing. Xavi Simons and Cody Gakpo both had chances, but could not beat the Irish defenders and goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.

In the 52nd minute, Tijani Reijnders' long-range shot hit Bazunu's hand, bounced off the post and bounced out. In the 68th minute, after Gakpo's cross, Denzel Dumfries rushed in and missed the shot right in front of the goalkeeper.

Ireland mounted a number of counter-attacks, but they were unable to overcome Virgil Van Dijk and his teammates. Adam Idah's shot hit goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and crossed the line, but was ruled out for offside.

In the final minutes, the Netherlands did not score any more goals, despite putting in a lot of pressure. The match ended 1-0, just enough for the home team to qualify for Euro 2024. The Netherlands are currently second in Group C with 15 points after seven matches, three points ahead of third-placed Greece and their head-to-head record. With only one match left, Greece cannot catch up.

France and the Netherlands secured two spots in Group B, while Greece entered the play-offs. Meanwhile, with six points and zero points, Ireland and Gibraltar both said goodbye to the tournament.

Weghorst played for Man Utd in the second half of the 2022-2023 season, on loan from Burnley. The 31-year-old striker scored two goals in 31 matches for the "Red Devils", won the League Cup and reached the FA Cup final. After being rejected by the "Red Devils", Weghorst moved to Hoffenheim. After the first 11 matches of the 2023-2024 season, he scored three goals for the German team.
