Cuban people march to call for the US to lift the embargo in the capital La Habana, Cuba on March 28, 2021.

The deal was later canceled by his successor Donald Trump, but Cuban authorities have continued to release prisoners.

The Deputy President of the Supreme People's Court of Cuba, Maricela Soza Ravelo, confirmed on state television on March 10 that the process of releasing the prisoners had been "successfully completed." According to her, 378 requests for release were submitted in January and 175 in February.

Previously, the Cuban Foreign Ministry affirmed that this decision reflected the "humane nature of the Cuban judicial system".

Before leaving office, on January 14, Mr. Biden removed Cuba from the so-called "list of countries sponsoring terrorism" of the US in exchange for Cuba's commitment to release 553 prisoners convicted of "various crimes".

However, just six days after taking office, Mr. Trump immediately canceled the Vatican-brokered agreement and reimposed sanctions on Cuba. At that time, 192 prisoners were confirmed to have been released. After Mr. Trump's decision, Cuba continued to release prisoners as agreed.
