Announcing 10 outstanding science and technology events in 2023

The fields voted include: Policy mechanism; social sciences and humanities; natural sciences; applied sciences; honoring scientists; international integration.

This is the 18th year this activity has been organized by the Vietnam Science and Technology Journalists Club with the participation of reporters and editors specializing in the field of science and technology from central and local press agencies.

Accordingly, the first event,In the field of policy mechanisms, the Central Executive Committee of the Party issued a new Resolution on developing the Vietnamese intellectual team. Based on the summary of 15 years of implementing Resolution No. 27-NQ/TW, dated August 6, 2008 of the Central Executive Committee of the 10th tenure on "building an intellectual team in the period of accelerating industrialization and modernization of the country", the 8th Conference of the Central Executive Committee of the 13th tenure issued Resolution No. 45-/NQTW "on continuing to build and promote the role of the intellectual team to meet the requirements of rapid and sustainable national development in the new period".

Resolution No. 45 sets the goal by 2030 to develop the intellectual team in terms of quantity and quality, especially the team of leading experts and scientists in key, important and new fields, to meet the requirements of industrialization and modernization of the country... Vision by 2045, the Vietnamese intellectual team will be strong, of high quality, with a reasonable structure, among the top in the region and approaching that of developed countries.

Second eventis the official handover of management rights of Hoa Lac High-Tech Park from the Ministry of Science and Technology to the Hanoi People's Committee.

Hoa Lac High-Tech Park is an important project assigned by the Government to the Ministry of Science and Technology to implement and manage in order to enhance the national science and technology potential. This is the first High-Tech Park in the country established by the Prime Minister in 1998. After 25 years of formation, construction and development, Hoa Lac High-Tech Park has attracted 111 investment projects (including 96 domestic projects and 15 foreign investment projects) with a total registered investment capital of more than 111,500 billion VND...

Third eventbelongs to the field of natural sciences. In 2023, the research team of the Institute of Information Technology (under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) successfully developed a Vietnamese-centered translation system, capable of two-way translation between Vietnamese and resource-poor languages ​​of the Southeast Asian region with quality equivalent to famous commercial products in the world. The system is currently capable of two-way translation between language pairs including Vietnamese - Lao, Vietnamese - Khmer, Vietnamese - Thai, Vietnamese - Malaysian and Vietnamese - Indonesian.

Fourth eventin the field of social sciences and humanities. That is the successful 3D reconstruction of the architecture of Kinh Thien Palace during the Le So period. At the end of November 2023, the Institute of Imperial Citadel Studies (under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences) announced "Research on decoding and successfully reconstructing 3D images of the architecture of Kinh Thien Palace during the Le So period". The research on decoding the architectural morphology of Kinh Thien Palace, the most important main hall in the Forbidden City of Thang Long during the Le So period, is a very serious and elaborate scientific research program of scientists at the Institute of Imperial Citadel Studies.

Fifth eventin the field of applied science. That is mastering the technology of heat-reflecting paint using domestically produced nano materials. Acquiring and inheriting advanced scientific and technological achievements in the world in general and in Vietnam in particular, in 2023, the Institute of Tropical Technology (under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) successfully developed solar heat-reflecting paint technology.

Currently, the Institute of Tropical Technology has completely mastered the technology of manufacturing heat-reflecting additives based on nano-sized materials and applied them in manufacturing highly efficient solar heat-reflecting paints. The solar heat-reflecting paint products manufactured by the Institute fully meet the strict technical standards of foreign countries and are equivalent to imported products but have higher economic efficiency and have been applied in civil and defense works (building roofs, oil tanks, fishing boats, etc.).

Friday eventThese are organ transplants that have helped Vietnam become a bright spot in organ transplants in Asia.

On February 15, the medical team of the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital performed a multi-organ transplant including a heart and kidney for a patient with end-stage heart and kidney failure, from a brain-dead multi-organ donor. This is the first successful simultaneous heart and kidney transplant in Vietnam. Previously, there were 3 successful multi-organ transplants at other centers, but they were liver, kidney, pancreas, and kidney transplants. Another successful transplant, on February 26, Cho Ray Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) and Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital (Hanoi) coordinated a cross-Vietnam organ transplant, when the "heart" of the donor was transferred from Ho Chi Minh City to the airport to return to Hanoi. At Viet Duc Hospital, with the participation of more than 40 doctors and medical staff from many units, after 8 hours of transplant, the "heart" of the donor was beating in the recipient's chest.

Saturday eventis the development of an integrated system for treating alum and saline water. Accordingly, the technology for filtering alum and saline water has been jointly researched by the Vietnam - Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST) and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) since 2021. After many testing processes in many different saline and alum areas in the Mekong Delta, by September 2023, VKIST had optimized and perfected the technology to treat alum and saline water. The technology is integrated with a coagulation and sedimentation system combined with a microfiltration system, an RO filtration system and finally sterilization with UV light before being put into a clean water tank for use. The system uses solar energy to help save operating costs. In addition, the system is intelligently designed, automatic operating mode, easy to use. The system treats alum water and brackish water into clean water, meeting drinking water standards according to the Ministry of Health's Regulation QCVN 01-2009/BYT, with a capacity of 12 cubic meters/day and night.

At the eighth event, Viettel successfully deployed the world's first 5G transceiver station according to Open RAN standards.

In November 2023, Viettel High Tech Corporation (Viettel High Tech, a member of Viettel Group) announced the successful deployment of the first 5G station on the network using ASIC chip technology supporting the Open RAN open standard for Qualcomm's 5G radio equipment. Viettel is the first partner in the world to deploy Qualcomm products into the network with real users and real data downloads.

This is a major breakthrough not only in Vietnam but also in the world, because from the research and development stage to the success on the real network, Viettel only completed within 8 months, from the time Viettel and Qualcomm announced the strategic cooperation on 5G at the Mobile World Congress MWC 2023 Barcelona (Spain) in February 2023. This result will contribute to promoting the commercialization process of 5G networks in Vietnam and the international market with a part of domestically produced 5G equipment in 2024.

In the field of honoring scientists,ninth event5 Vietnamese scientists honored in the 2023 Rising Star Science Ranking. Research.com website - a prestigious electronic information portal for world scientists, has announced the ranking of outstanding rising stars of science in the world in 2023. Among the 7 scientists working in Vietnam named, 5 are domestic and 2 are foreigners, including: Professor, Doctor Tran Xuan Bach (Hanoi Medical University, ranked 2nd in the world); Dr. Tran Nguyen Hai (Duy Tan University, ranked 603), Dr. Thai Hoang Chien (Ton Duc Thang University, ranked 621), Dr. Phung Van Phuc (Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, ranked 762) and Dr. Hoang Nhat Duc (Duy Tan University, ranked 968).

The field of international integration contributesevent 10with the National Innovation Center strengthening international cooperation in the semiconductor industry.

On October 28, the new facility of the National Innovation Center (NIC) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment was inaugurated and put into operation at the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park (Hanoi). The inauguration and operation of the Hoa Lac facility of the National Innovation Center is an effort by the Ministry of Planning and Investment to turn this center into a nucleus to promote economic growth.

Accordingly, the National Innovation Center will be the place to gather, lead and connect, gradually perfecting the national innovation ecosystem. Especially in the field of semiconductors, the National Innovation Center has activities related to calling for investment and international cooperation in this field. Currently, the National Innovation Center, together with foreign and domestic partners, is training and improving the quality of human resources in the semiconductor industry for Vietnam; focusing on in-depth training courses on microchip design.
