Part 2 of the movie 'Squid Game' was nominated for the Golden Globe for the category of Best Drama Television Series 3 weeks before its release.
The organizers announced the nominations on the evening of December 9 (Hanoi time), in which part 2 of "Squid Game" competed with "The Day of the Jackal" (Peacock), "The Diplomat" (Netflix), "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" (Prime Video), "Slow Horses" (AppleTV) and "Shogun" (FX/Hulu) to win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in 2024.
The story is set 3 years after player 456 - Gi Hun (played by Lee Jung Jae) - won the Squid Game. He is determined to find out who is behind and end the cruel game, including Hwang In Ho (Lee Byung Hun) - the coordinator of the games.
Director Hwang Dong Hyuk revealed that the confrontation between the two characters will last until the final episode of season 3. The cast of season 2 also includes Wi Ha Jun, Gong Yoo, new actors Yim Siwan, Kang Ha Neul, Park Gyu Young, Lee Jin Uk, Park Sung Hoon, Jo Yu Ri and Choi Seung Hyun (T.O.P, former member of Big Bang).
According to Forbes, the only way "Squid Game" could have been nominated for a second season before it aired was because Netflix gave Golden Globe voters an early look at the film. This was considered a risky move for the series as the plot of the sequel is being kept under wraps. To prevent leaks, Netflix has taken strict security measures such as sealing the film's copyright and prohibiting spoilers.
On social network X, many people said that the work being nominated before its release was a good sign, however, some opinions said that this was a strategic move by Netflix to create buzz and attract public attention.
The Golden Globes are run by Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions (DCP), after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association sold all assets, rights and ownership of the show in June 2023.
Starting in 2024, each category will have six entries, instead of five. The 82nd awards ceremony will take place on January 5, 2025, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser.
